Abby

Baltimore, Maryland

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: Intermezzo worsted weight mercerized cotton in Cyclamen (a deep, hot pink).

Starting: Mid September

Adrianne Lilley

Boston, MA

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: I am using Classic Elite Waterspun, Color Grape.

Starting: September 1

Alison Boucher

Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada

Sweater: Summer Braids

Yarn: “Helena” by Diamond Yarns, an easy-care cotton/rayon blend that has a nice sheen to it, giving it a dressy look. I'm doing it in a golden brown color that will probably look terrific with Christmas wear.

Starting: mid-September (this is my motivation to finish up a couple of UFO's first).

Amy Pickard

Manchester, UK

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: I know, I know - I'm VERY late with this, but in my defence I wasn't here when the project started.

A cone of recycled cotton-mix yarn from Evergreen bought off eBay.

This is for my mother, who is both ample and short (by my 5’6” standards, anyway!), so I'll probably be making the shorter version. Also I only have just over 900g of yarn, so some clever additions to the cuffs may become necessary!

Starting: Jan 2004 (probably)

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Starting: Early, probably in August.

Betsey Hoyt

Evansville, IN

Sweater: Summer Braids

Yarn: I will use Butterfly Super-10 in Cream, which I bought from the Cabin Fever booth at Stitches Midwest. This is like Tahki's Cotton Classic. I am seriously considering knitting this on a Studio LK-150 plastic bed midgauge machine. I may try to incorporate bust darts and a more traditional set-in sleeve.

Starting: sometime in September

Bev Heitke

Stoughton, WI

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: Cascade 220

Starting: 09/16/02

Bonnie Bakley

Starting: I already have started it.

Christine

Starting: 9/1/02

Cyndi Cassidy

Sweater: Summer Braids

Yarn: Butterfly Super 10 DK weight cotton yarn in Deep Shrimp! I'm planning on making the Summer Braids pattern in the longer length as described in the Braids pattern.

Starting: October 1, 2002

Daisy Lovain

Garden City, MI

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: Have some alpaca that I’d like to use but don’t know if I can because I haven’t seen the pattern.

Starting: next month sometime (posted February, 2003)

Dawn Priestman

London UK

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: Sirdar Opium, a dk weight cotton/silk/acrylic blend in a charcoal black colour. I'm knitting the braids for worsted weight yarns as this is closer to my tension. I've finished the body, button bands and am half way through the first sleeve. I'm particularly pleased with the way the button bands have turned out - and it was painless! This project had been languishing for many months, but the posts on this list have prompted me to get it out and work on it again (albeit occasionally). I love the pattern, it's a wonderful looking garment and I anticipate this being something that I'll knit again in different yarns.

Starting: spring 2002!

Deb Bruce

Bakersfield, CA USA

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: Nature Spun

Starting: Started 9/8/03

Debbie Klement

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Sweater: Summer Braids

Yarn: Magic Garden “Buttons,” wash and wear DK made in New Zealand for Naturally Hand Knit Yarns .

This is a light green, kind of a celery green with a polyester effect yarn running in it making little tiny slubs of yellow, red and blue. This is a “Childrens’” garment yarn that I saw made up in red as a sample piece. It was made as a child’s sleeveless shell with a narrow cable up the centre so I knew it would take the “braid” well.

Starting: April 2003

Deborah Morris

Yarmouth, MA

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: Perhaps Lionbrand

Starting: September, 2008

Elaine in Kentucky

Lexington, KY

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: Cascade Pebble Beach- a discontinued yarn made of equal amounts of cotton, alpaca, and wool

Starting: August 26

Elaine Marcus

Portland, OR, USA

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: Some kind of smooth red wool. I'm thinking about Cascade 220, because it's not too spendy, and comes in a good deep red.

Starting: Later this month

Elinor Dashwood

Virginia Beach, VA

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Knitting Worsted, 85% wool and 15% mohair.

Starting: As soon as my yarn arrives, about 10/01/04

Sweater: Summer Braids

Yarn: Forsell Touch of Silk DK -- Limestone

Starting: Labor Day

Emma Crew

During swatching I decided to shorten the cable repeat to 6 rows rather than 8. I have also omitted the slipped stitches in the cable.

Starting: 16 January 2004

Fran Grant

Roscommon,Michigan

Sweater: Summer Braids

Yarn: I will probably try it with a cotton.

Starting: right away (7/16/2005)

Fran Tanner

Fresno, CA

Sweater: Summer Braids

Yarn: Crystal Palace's Georgia Cotton in a Rasberry color from my stash or Classic Elite's Provence in one of their many reds which I would have to purchase; actually I'm partial to the Provence swatch -- decisions, decisions, decisions.

Starting: Made gauge and worked pattern sample, and cast on last evening, Jan 25 '04!

Francine Houston

Kitchener, On, Canada

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: I'm going to be using my handspun yarn that i've been spinning and collecting for about 4 months now..It's a white corriedale 2 ply that is spun to roughly a “sockweight yarn.” I am considering dyeing the wool into rainbow colours so that each of the braids would be a different colour, with a natural black corry as the “base” colour. My 12 yr old daughter saw the sweater, and immediately wanted one...so i guess this one will be for her. Since it's in a weight of yarn much finer that the pattern calls for, and having the smaller needles to accomodate the finer yarn, i figure it should just about fit my 12 yr old...i'll make one for myself once this one is finished..

Starting: Sept 10th..after school starts

Gari Strawn

not given

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: I have several candidates, I will probably not make up my mind until I see the pattern. I have been buying big bundles from a lovely lady who lives in Rhode Island, Barbara Furia. I found her on ebay and have continued buying from her.

Starting: September 2

Jane Ramsay

Kingston, Ontario, Canada

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: Stop! Mohair

Starting: as soon as i can figure out how to get a copy of the pattern (submitted April, 2006)

Janis Garwood

Crossville, TN

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: This is a worsted weight wool I picked up at a farm in Strasburg, VA. She sends her wool to Barlett Wools to have it spun and dyed so it is just like the yarn Barlett sells. I'm adding an extra rib panel on each side of the side seam and after 6” will start decreasing these extra stitches until I am “one with the pattern.” I'm doing the short version but extending it to 26 - 28”.

Starting: 30 September 2002

Janna Clark

Portland, Oregon

Sweater: Braids

Yarn:

Version 1 (for my mother, Ann McKenzie): Pakucho Organic Cotton, with “grown-in ” color, in “Avacado”

Version 2 (for me): still deciding, but leaning towards Galway in color 15 (sort of a lupine, or blueberry)

Starting: Sept. 1 (version 1)

Jean Manz

New Berlin, Wisconsin;USA

Sweater: Braids

Yarn: MacAusland wool in a blue heather color

Starting: 9/1/2002

Jeanette M-H

Southwest Missouri, USA

Sweater: Braids & Summer Braids

Yarn: I'm making both the Summer Braids and the (Winter) Braids. For the (Winter) Braids I am using Plymouth's Encore in a medium plummy-eggplant. I have been making my own buttons out of Fimo classic clay and I think I will make a plum marble-looking set. (I have 2 other items going which are done in purple so I guess this season will be a purple one for me.) And for the Summer Braids, I am using a medium pink sportweight called Tamm 24/7--it is on a cone and is usually for machine knitters but works great for hand knitting, too, because I only have to buy one cone (great space saver). I will also make Fimo clay buttons for this one either in the shape of a rose or maybe a milleflior to look like a rose--haven't decided yet. My Thursday night knitting group is also making the Braids. Some are A-K'ers. There is such a great variety of yarns. Three are making the long version of what we have renamed the Winter Braids and 2 are/or will be making the Summer Braids. The other 3 are making the short version of the (Winter) Braids. Only 1 has opted out to make the Ridgeway Lite in a Green Fleck.

Starting: I started them in Mid August--couldn't wait

Starting: I am a beginner, so it depends on how hard the project is.

Judy Walker

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA

Sweater: Summer Braids

Yarn: Stylecraft Linen Look DK in a denim blue color.

I have the body of the sweater finished and one sleeve done. I do not like the fit of that sleeve, however, and did not clip the yarn. There were not enough decreases and the sleeve opening is too big for my liking. I am trying the other sleeve, decreasing from the start, down to about 46 stitches, and will see how that fits. If it works out I will frog the first sleeve and redo it.

This has been a fun pattern and has knit up fairly quickly for me.

Judy has already finished her sweater!

Here are her final notes about the sleeves:

I did end up doing the first sleeve over, completely. When I did the second sleeve I did a decrease every third row, and ended up with about 48 stitches. This seemed to be a better width for the end of the sweater.

I don't recall ever wearing a sweater without ribbing at the wrist, so I wanted this sleeve to not be too loose. 48 stitches seemed to be just about right.

Sweater: Braids

It's actually listed under DK weight but as mentioned on the Elann website, I'm getting 20st/4” on size 7 needles or gauge for this project. So the advantages are 1. it's slightly lighter than a true worsted, 2. it will be machine washable, and 3. was $7.99/pound! It's silver with multicolored neps for interest but doesn't seem to hide the pattern thus far.
