Here are the details of Ellen's sweater: I'm one of the knitters who was inspired by Maureen's Cabled Tee design as well as an old Brunswick pattern from 1968 (volume 668). The Brunswick pattern only went up to size 16 and I was too impatient to wait for the KAL pattern so I bought Sweater Wizard to try to come up with a basic v-neck pattern and incorporate the center cable and sleeve treatment. I had plenty of hand dyed yarn I purchased at the Rhinebeck NY sheep and wool festival from Cloverleaf Farms. It's a very soft blend of 55% merino and 45% mohair which I knit on US #7's at 4.5 st per inch. The photo does not do justice to the colors. Thanks to Jean R's advice, I rethought the armhole depth and reworked the Sweater Wizard pattern to match my actual arm measurements. It made a huge difference. I should have paid more attention to the depth of the neck opening as it turned out too low. I sewed it up a couple of inches which ended up making a light area of the wool more prominent where the 'V' separates. I may drop the opening back down about an inch to reduce this effect. The other thing you can see is the ruffling effect at the bottom of the cable section. Pat's pattern does a much better job with this. I added a horizontal cable to the bottom of the 3/4 length sleeves. I read several posts about how to pick up and knit on a band like this, but I didn't entirely understand the suggestions so I knit the bands till they seemed to be the right length, connected the ends and then sewed them on; easing in the sleeve fullness as I went. I'm likely to knit this design again....but next time I'll use the AK pattern. Thanks to everyone for the inspiration. And thanks to Ellen for sharing her photo and experience! | |
