Important Preliminary Swatches (from Carol Hurt) |
There's an important bit of swatching to do before you start knitting your shawl! Make 2 swatches: a 6" swatch in knit garter (knit every row) and a 6" swatch in purl garter (purl every row). You may find you have to use different needle sizes on the two halves of your shawl, but when the swatches match, that assures that the right half and the left half of the shawl will match! |

Sizing the Radiant Shawl - if necessary (from Lucy Neatby) |
For a longer over-all shawl continue to make the tails wider before beginnning the short rows (I don't think this will be necessary) but it will change the number of stitches. You can also add extra panels to the center back to your heart's content (this wouldn't involve altering the pattern in any way until this point). |

Keeping Track of Short Row Wraps (from Carol Hurt) |
There are lots of short rows in this shawl, but since they're in garter stitch you don't have to pick up the wraps. You just have to know where they are so you can begin counting for the next wrap. SO... when I wrap and turn, I also "lay in" a 6 piece of contrast yarn. Then when I work back I can easily see where to begin counting to make another wrap. |

Keeping Track of Increase Rows (from Carol Hurt) |
One more hint....Refer to your pattern Note #6 and also Triangle #1. Lucy mentions that you will be increasing *every other* row. When you are doing the increasing, you are also doing a YO at the beginning of that row. It helped me to simply put a safety pin or split ring marker in the YO where I increased. The next row is plain - no increase, no marker. The following row IS an increase, so I move the marker to that YO.......continue throughout. |

My counts don't match! What now? (from Lucy Neatby) |
For anyone who winds up at the center back with slightly different numbers of stitches on the two needles prior to joining : Firstly, don't worry about it! Just note or mark which side has the excess stitches, then knit two sts from the long side together with one from the short side as you you perform your modified 3 needle bind off. Avoid adjusting near the tip or neck edge and scatter the adjustments across the row. Happy knitting to you all, Lucy |
