A group of Ample-Knitters have picked January, 2003 to knit sweaters from yarns already residing in their stashes. Lister Paula Roberts suggested this last summer, writing, “Since I’ve had those ufo’s & stash on the mind....how about somehow incorporating this into a KAL from stash shopping? Perhaps using a design it yourself....or a modify it yourself...or a pattern you’ve used before....then trying NOT to buy new yarn for it. Kind of a STASHALONG with creativity....does anyone like that idea? I love to design my own....or branch off from other patterns...and not buying new yarn just appeals to me alot. Maybe after the new year as holiday bills start to hit.....so that new expenses aren’t added.” Stash can be broadly defined as “yarn that lives with you.” List-owner Shelda Eggers expanded on the idea a bit, adding the category of “problematic” stash (yarn you have no idea what to do with) as opposed to “just” stash (yarn purchased for a specific sweater that you haven’t gotten around to knitting yet). Shelda wrote, “The idea is to do sweaters where we would ‘shop’ for yarns from our stashes. Of course not everyone has a stash to shop from, but I know a good percentage of us do! I plan to make my ‘shopping’ a bit of a challenge, to put together problem yarns that I don’t yet have a plan for, rather than just grabbing one of my many ready-to-go projects.” Any stash counts, however, whether the yarn in question moved in with you only recently or back in 1980! The stash-a-long idea was appealing to a lot of folks on the list, so we made our plans to start in early 2003.
