Ample-Knitters Warm Weather Knitalong
or “Beating the Heat in January”

A group of Ample-Knitters will be knitting warm weather sweaters in January 2002, in order to have them completed before warm weather comes to the northern hemisphere. Southern hemisphere knitters may choose to knit cold weather sweaters in keeping with the “unseasonable” theme of this knitalong.

The Knitalong begins 15 January 2002, and all Ample-Knitters subscribers are invited to join.

Lister Michele Kesler got us thinking about this way of planning and scheduling our knitting in December, when she wrote to Ample-Knitters:

I'm trying something new (to me) in organizing my projects. In the past, I've always worked on wools/wintery stuff from fall through to spring while the weather was cooler and on cottons/blends during the hotter weather. I think it's mental, working on the type of fabric that I'm currently wearing. But what always happens is that I finish up projects and have to put them away until the next season - no instant gratification in wearing them! So, I've organized my projects into groups: I have 6 WIPs that are cool weather based that I'm going to finish, then I'm going to start on two year-round/transitional weather projects, then I'm going to start on the warm weather stuff until August. Then I will go back to the transitional stuff, then to cool weather stuff.

Hope that makes sense - what I'm trying to do is set it up so that when a project is finished, I will be able to wear it at least ONCE before putting it away for the next season. I'll let y'all know if this system works for me.

Many listers agreed that we'd like to have a January knitalong to put this plan into action, and we started the search for the perfect warm weather sweater. A big thank you to Carol Hurt for helping keep us on track here, and for volunteering to keep a list of the sweaters we mentioned!

  • Ample-Knitters Suggestions for Warm Weather Knits (Notes and links coming soon!)

Any warm weather sweater you've been wanting to knit is just fine for Knitalong participation, but the sweater that has captured the list's attention is Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer's 3-to-2 Any Gauge Sweater. Patterns for this sweater (and many other things!) can be ordered from Jackie at HeartStrings Fiber Arts. (This link will open a new window.) Or follow this direct link to the pattern. Jackie is with us on the list, and has generously been sharing hints and answering questions about this pattern. Thanks so much, Jackie!
